Emerald Information
Emerald is a green variety of the mineral BERYL and one of the most highly prized of gems.
The most well known fact is that an emerald will
always show visible inclusions, in fact any
emerald without inclusions is suspected to be
synthetic or imitation. Emerald inclusions,
which are caused by calcite deposits are called
jardin a French word meaning garden.
The "emerald cut" also known as "octagon" is the most popular shape for emeralds in rings and jewelry.
All emeralds are oil treated when they are cut to
reduce the likelihood of fracture. This treatment
is perfectly acceptable in the gem trade. Emeralds
should be re-oiled every few years.
Emeralds are delicate gems and must be gently taken care of because of
the nature of emerald's natural structure.
Avoid placing emeralds in hot temperature, ultrasonic, chemicals, harsh detergents
swimming pools, ultrasonic cleaner, steamy/hot water etc. . .
The highest quality emerald has the color of fresh young grass. Almost spectral green.
The finest emeralds are from Columbia. The emerald has been cherished since 4000 BC when it was traded
at the earliest known gem market in Babylon.
