Sapphire is a type of corundum that includes all colors aside from red while ruby is a variety of red corundum. In a fundamental part, Ruby is a red sapphire because sapphire and ruby are alike in all characteristics or features expect for the color. Ruby color ranges from red to dark reddish-brown and it is identified and recognized by its passionate red color. Also, it is most fascinating gem because of its hardness, luster, durability and rarity. It has a 9 score on Moh’s scale. Those rubies that are transparent are rarer compared to diamonds and it is valued the most than other gems excluding deep colored fancy diamonds. Semi-opaque or opaque rubies are less valued even it has asterism.

Deep blood red ruby with a lightly bluish hue is the most desired color by everyone. This type is known as “Burmese Ruby” or “Pigeon’s Blood Ruby” which barely surpass several carats and this can be worth millions of dollars.  The brownish hue type of ruby is from Thailand which the most type that can found in the market and this can be treated by heat to enhance the color. This treatment can augment the pellucidity by eliminating the tiny internal flaws of the gems. There are also lab grown ruby jewelry that possess that same chemical and physical features of the natural gem and it has alike flawless beauty and perfect color. In the middle ages, it was believe that a jewelry with Ruby can protect wearer from drowning,  it cures rheumatism and relieves pain.

The appellation ‘ruby’ was derived from the Latin word ‘rubens’ which means ‘red’. Its color red is described as warm and fiery. Ruby is at risk of breaking if handled roughly since it is a hard and a durable gem still. In 1902, Rubies were first synthesized which is known as the Verneuil process. Most of the rubies in the market are synthetic and its only gem experts can differentiate the natural to synthetic rubies. It is used as natural rubies substitute for it is inexpensive.
