Ruby is a red variety of the corundum mineral. Sapphire, the other variety of corundum, includes all colors of corundum aside from red. In essence, ruby is a red sapphire, since ruby jewelry and sapphire jewelry are almost identical in all properties except for color. The color of ruby varies from bright red to dark reddish-brown. Ruby is distinguished and recognized by all for its fiery red color. Beside its color, it is a most desirable gem due to its hardness, luster, durability and rarity. It has a Moh's hardness of 9. Transparent rubies of large sizes are even rarely available than diamonds. Transparent, flawless rubies values much more than all other gems (except for deeply colored "fancy diamonds"). Semi-opaque or opaque rubies have little value, even if they display asterism.
The most preferred color by everyone is a deep blood red ruby with a slightly bluish hue. This type of ruby is known as "Burmese Ruby" or "Pigeon's Blood Ruby". Burmese ruby jewelry rarely exceeds several carats and large flawless Burmese rubies can be worth millions of dollars. Most ruby jewelry on the market is from Thailand, and these are of brownish hue. These rubies can be heat-treated to improve color. Heat-treating can increase its transparency by removing tiny internal flaws in these rubies. We also offer lab grown ruby jewelry. The name 'ruby' was derived from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red'. The color, red of the ruby is incomparable: warm and fiery. Ruby jewelry is worn as birthstone for July. Ruby is a hard and durable gem, but it is still subject to chipping and cracking if handled roughly. In 1902, Rubies were first synthesized. The process of manufacturing synthetic rubies is known as the Verneuil process. Most of the rubies in the market are synthetic. Only gems experts can distinguish between natural and synthetic rubies.
